What Is the Tumbling E Chart?
The Tumbling E Chart is a specialized variation of the standard Snellen eye chart designed specifically for patients who cannot identify English letters. This includes young children who have not yet learned the alphabet, patients who are illiterate, or individuals who do not speak the local language. Instead of 26 different letters, this chart uses a single optotype: the capital letter E. The E is rotated in four distinct directions: up, down, left, and right. The size of the E decreases on each line, following the same 20/20 geometric progression as a standard adult chart, ensuring that the visual acuity measurement is medically equivalent.
