Symptoms

Common symptoms while reading include letters appearing to move, blurring, shimmering, or seeing patterns of color or light that are not actually there.

Overlapping Conditions

Often confused with dyslexia, it is sometimes successfully managed by using colored overlays or tinted lenses (known as precision tints) to reduce the perceived contrast and filter specific wavelengths of light.

Cause Theories

Theories suggest it may be related to hyperexcitability in the visual cortex, particularly in neurons that process fine detail (high spatial frequency). It is not an optical problem.

Can it cause reading difficulty?

Yes, the perceptual distortions can significantly slow down reading speed, comprehension, and cause quick onset of fatigue.

Is it the same as eye strain?

Eye strain (asthenopia) is often caused by uncorrected refractive error or convergence problems. Visual stress is caused by the pattern and is alleviated by color filters.

What is a 'Colorimetry Test'?

A specialized test used to determine the exact color filter (hue, saturation, and brightness) that provides the maximum relief from visual stress symptoms for an individual.
