Terms

A misalignment that is only evident when one eye is covered is called a Phoria (latent misalignment). A constant, visible misalignment is called a Tropia (manifest misalignment or strabismus).

Causes of Misalignment

Can be caused by problems with the extraocular muscles, innervation by the cranial nerves (III, IV, VI), or central control of the fusion mechanism.

Correction

Corrected through prescription prism (to optically shift the image), vision therapy (to train the eye muscles), or, in severe cases, eye muscle surgery.

What is 'esotropia'?

A common type of manifest misalignment where one or both eyes turn inward toward the nose.

What is 'fusion'?

The neurophysiological process that takes the two slightly different images created by aligned eyes and combines them into a single, cohesive image.

Why is alignment important for reading?

Even a small misalignment (phoria) can cause visual fatigue and headaches during prolonged reading as the eyes constantly strain to maintain alignment and fusion.
