What Is the Corneal Stromal Layer?
The corneal stromal layer is the thick, middle section of the cornea that gives it most of its strength and shape. It is made of regularly arranged collagen fibers and supporting cells that keep the tissue firm yet slightly flexible. The way these fibers line up has a strong effect on how light passes through the cornea. Disorders that alter stromal structure can distort focus, create haze, or weaken the cornea. Understanding the corneal stromal layer helps explain why some conditions lead to bulging, thinning, or scarring.
