What Is Spirit Gum?

Spirit gum is a traditional theatrical adhesive used to attach lightweight prosthetics, crepe hair, wigs, facial hair, bald-cap edges, and other costume pieces to the skin. Classic formulations use an alcohol-based resin solution that becomes tacky as the solvent evaporates. It has been used for stage, film, cosplay, and Halloween makeup because it creates a relatively strong temporary bond. Different brands can use different formulas, so application and removal directions should be checked on the specific product.

What Is Spirit Gum Used For?

Spirit gum is commonly used to hold small prosthetic noses, wounds, ears, hair pieces, mustaches, beards, and similar costume elements. It works best on clean, dry skin where oil and moisture will not interfere with adhesion. Larger or highly flexible silicone appliances can require another type of prosthetic adhesive designed specifically for that material. The best adhesive depends on the weight of the piece, location on the body, expected movement, and how long the costume will be worn.

How Is Spirit Gum Applied?

A thin layer of spirit gum is brushed or dabbed onto clean, dry skin in the area where the prosthetic or hair will sit. The adhesive is allowed to become tacky, and some theatrical techniques lightly tap the surface to increase tack before the piece is pressed into place. The prosthetic is then positioned and held until the bond is secure. Spirit gum should not be placed in the eyes, on mucous membranes, or on areas prohibited by the product label.

How Is Spirit Gum Removed?

Spirit gum should be dissolved with a compatible spirit gum remover or adhesive remover rather than peeled aggressively from the skin. The remover is worked around and under the attached piece until the bond softens. Remaining adhesive can then be gently wiped away before the skin is washed according to the product directions. Because many removers contain solvents, they should be used in a ventilated area and kept away from the eyes and open flame when the label gives those warnings.

What Are the Safety Risks of Spirit Gum?

Spirit gum can irritate sensitive skin and can cause redness, stinging, dryness, or an allergic contact reaction in some users. Many classic formulas contain alcohol and other volatile ingredients, making them flammable before they have fully dried. Adhesive should not be used on damaged skin or near the eyes unless the product is specifically labeled for that use. Patch testing before a major application and using the manufacturer's remover can reduce the chance of an unpleasant skin reaction or traumatic removal.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spirit Gum

Is spirit gum a glue?

Yes. It is a temporary theatrical adhesive formulated for attaching selected costume, hair, and prosthetic pieces to the skin.

Can spirit gum be used for Halloween prosthetics?

Yes. It is commonly used for smaller prosthetics and costume pieces, although some materials work better with specialty silicone or medical-grade theatrical adhesives.

How do you remove spirit gum?
