What Is Residual Astigmatism?

Internal Origin

This term often refers specifically to astigmatism arising from the internal optical components of the eye, such as the crystalline lens, rather than the cornea (which is usually addressed by surgery or contact lenses).

Post-Surgical

After corneal procedures like LASIK, residual astigmatism may result from imperfect healing, biomechanical changes in the cornea, or pre-existing lenticular astigmatism.

Contact Lens Fitting

When a patient wears a standard rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lens, the lens corrects the corneal astigmatism by creating a new, spherical surface. Any remaining astigmatism is considered residual (or lenticular) and must be corrected using a toric over-refraction.

Does it affect vision?

Yes. Any significant residual astigmatism will result in a blur or distortion that cannot be corrected with simple spherical spectacle lenses.

How is it measured?

It is measured via a subjective manifest refraction, typically after the surgical procedure or while the patient is wearing the primary corrective lens (e.g., an RGP lens).

How is it corrected after LASIK?

It can often be corrected with a secondary, minor laser enhancement procedure (retreatment) or by prescribing a spectacle lens to compensate for the remaining error.
