What Is Pingueculitis?
Pingueculitis is inflammation of a pinguecula, a yellowish bump on the conjunctiva near the cornea that arises from long term sun and environmental exposure. When this tissue becomes irritated, it turns red and swollen and can feel scratchy or sore. Patients often complain of a localized red spot on the white of the eye, foreign body sensation, and mild light sensitivity. Unlike pterygium, pingueculitis does not involve growth over the cornea itself. The condition is usually benign but can be bothersome.
