Clinical Signs

Characterized by fine lines and deep wrinkles (crow's feet), loss of skin elasticity, mottled pigmentation (sun spots), and dryness in the eyelid and cheek areas.

Vulnerability

The periocular skin is extremely thin and has less protective subcutaneous fat compared to other areas of the face, making it highly susceptible to UV-induced damage.

Prevention

Effective prevention requires the consistent use of UV-blocking sunglasses (to cover the skin), broad-spectrum sunscreen, and avoidance of direct peak-hour sun exposure.

Does eye rubbing contribute?

Yes. Chronic, vigorous eye rubbing can physically degrade collagen and elastin and exacerbate the effects of photo-aging and skin sagging.

Does UV exposure worsen dry eyes?

UV exposure can contribute to chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins, affecting the meibomian glands, which can worsen evaporative dry eye disease.

Is it reversible?

The damage is not fully reversible, but its appearance can be improved with topical retinoids, laser treatments, and consistent future UV protection.
