When Is Orbital Floor Repair Needed?

Some orbital floor fractures heal without an operation. Surgery may be considered for persistent double vision, trapped eye muscles or tissue, or a noticeably sunken eye. The decision follows an eye examination and imaging of the fracture.

How Is the Orbital Floor Repaired?

The surgeon reaches the fracture through an incision near or inside the lower eyelid. Displaced tissue is moved out of the defect. An implant or graft may then support the orbital floor if the gap requires it.

What Happens During Recovery?

Swelling and bruising around the eye are common after surgery. Follow-up visits assess vision, eye movement, and healing. Patients may be told to avoid blowing the nose while the area recovers.

What Are the Risks?

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, and continued double vision. The implant can shift or cause other problems. Loss of vision is rare but serious.

Frequently Asked Questions About Orbital Floor Repair

Does every orbital floor fracture need surgery?

No. Treatment depends on symptoms, eye movement, eye position, and the extent of the fracture.

Is the eye removed during orbital floor repair?

No. The operation addresses the supporting bone and nearby tissue beneath the eye.

Is an implant always used?

No. The need for an implant or graft depends on the size and shape of the defect.

Will double vision go away after repair?

Double vision can improve, but recovery is not guaranteed. Its cause and the condition of the eye muscles affect the result.
