What Is the Oculo-Vestibular Reflex?
The oculo-vestibular reflex, more commonly known as the Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (VOR), is a primitive neurological mechanism that keeps your eyes stable while your head is in motion. When you turn your head to the right, this reflex causes your eyes to move to the left at the exact same speed, ensuring that the image on your retina remains perfectly still. This reflex is so fast that it is considered one of the quickest in the human body, with a latency of less than ten milliseconds. Without a functioning oculo-vestibular reflex, the world would look like a "shaky" home movie every time you walked or moved your head, a condition called oscillopsia.
