What Is a Nictitating Spasm of the Eyelid?
A nictitating spasm refers to a series of rapid, involuntary contractions of the orbicularis oculi muscle that result in uncontrollable blinking or eyelid closure. While the term originates from the "nictitating membrane" found in animals, in humans, it describes a neuromuscular dysfunction where the eyelid behaves as if it is trying to shield the eye from a non-existent threat. These spasms can range from a minor nuisance (myokymia) to a severe functional impairment where the eyelids remain clamped shut for several seconds or minutes. Identifying the difference between a simple stress-induced twitch and a chronic neurological disorder is the primary focus of a clinical eyelid evaluation.
