What Is Nephritic Edema of the Eyelids?
Nephritic edema of the eyelids is swelling around the eyes caused by kidney disease and fluid retention. It often appears as soft, puffy upper and lower lids that are most noticeable in the morning. The periorbital tissues collect fluid because they are loose and dependent when a person lies flat during sleep. This type of edema is commonly seen in glomerulonephritis and other acute or chronic renal disorders. Recognizing the pattern can prompt evaluation for underlying kidney problems.
