What Is Neovascularization of the Angle (NVA)?
Neovascularization of the angle, or NVA, is growth of fine, abnormal blood vessels across the trabecular meshwork and anterior chamber angle. These vessels usually arise in eyes with severe retinal ischemia and high levels of angiogenic factors. At first, they form a delicate network, but over time fibrous tissue accompanies them. This fibrovascular membrane can contract and close the angle, blocking aqueous outflow. The result is a form of secondary glaucoma called neovascular glaucoma, which often has very high intraocular pressure.
