How Does the Eye Focus for Near Vision?

Focusing for near vision involves three actions. First, the ciliary muscle contracts, which releases tension on the lens. The lens then thickens and becomes more curved. Second, the pupils constrict to increase depth of focus. Third, the eyes converge (turn inward) to maintain the object's focus. All these actions happen at the same time and are known as the accommodative triad.

What Happens When Near Vision is Lost?

The loss of near vision is most commonly caused by presbyopia, which is a natural aging process. Starting around age 40, the eye's lens becomes less flexible and harder. This hardening reduces the eye's ability to accommodate (change shape), making close-up focusing difficult and blurry.
