What Is a Near Point Card in Vision Testing?
A near point card is a handheld diagnostic tool featuring rows of text and symbols in progressively smaller sizes, used to measure a patient's "near visual acuity." Unlike the large wall chart used for distance, the near card is held at a standard "reading distance" of 14 to 16 inches. The card contains different text formats, such as the "Jaeger" (J1, J2) scale or the "Point" (N5, N8) scale, to determine the smallest print a person can comfortably see. This test is the primary way eye care professionals diagnose presbyopia and verify the accuracy of a reading glasses or "Near Addition" prescription.
