What Is a Naso-Orbital Fracture Affecting the Eye Socket?
A naso-orbital fracture, more formally known as a Naso-Orbito-Ethmoid (NOE) fracture, is a complex injury involving the central bones of the face where the nose meets the eye socket. This injury occurs when a high-impact force hits the bridge of the nose, shattering the delicate "ethmoid" bones and pushing them back into the space between the eyes. Because these bones anchor the inner corners of the eyelids and the tear drainage system, a naso-orbital fracture often results in a "flattened" face and a permanent widening of the distance between the eyes. Managing this fracture is a surgical priority because it directly threatens the stability of the globe and the function of the optic nerve.
