Myopic degeneration, also called pathologic or degenerative myopia, is progressive damage to the back of the eye caused by elongation of a highly nearsighted eye. As the eyeball stretches, the retina, choroid, and supporting layers thin and can develop atrophy, cracks, a bulging area (staphyloma), and abnormal new blood vessels. These changes raise the risk of central vision loss, retinal detachment, and glaucoma.
