What Is Mucus Fishing Syndrome?
Mucus Fishing Syndrome (MFS) is a vicious cycle where a person repeatedly removes or "fishes" strands of eye mucus from their eye using a finger, tissue, or cotton swab. The act of removing the mucus provides temporary relief but actually causes trauma and irritation to the delicate ocular surface (the front of the eye).
In response, the eye produces more mucus to protect itself, which prompts the person to fish it out again, starting the cycle over and prolonging the problem.
