Visual Aura (Scotoma)

The most common visual aura is a scintillating scotoma, a gradual expansion of a blind spot surrounded by shimmering, zigzag lines or flashing lights.

Duration and Onset

The aura typically lasts between 5 and 60 minutes and usually occurs before the onset of the head pain. The visual symptoms themselves are temporary and resolve completely.

Retinal Migraine Distinction

True "Retinal Migraine" is rare and involves temporary, severe vision loss in only one eye, unlike the binocular (both eyes) symptoms of a classic visual aura.

Are they always followed by pain?

No. Some individuals experience the visual aura without the subsequent headache (migraine aura without headache).

How does the aura develop?

It is caused by a slow, wave-like spreading of electrical activity across the visual cortex of the brain (Cortical Spreading Depression).

Should I see a doctor for the first time?

Yes. Any new or sudden visual disturbance, especially if accompanied by a shadow or vision loss, should be evaluated to rule out serious conditions like retinal detachment or TIA/stroke.
