What Is Margin Reflex Distance?
Margin Reflex Distance (MRD) is a fundamental clinical measurement used to quantify the position of the upper and lower eyelids in relation to the center of the pupil. The measurement is taken by shining a penlight into the patient's eye and measuring the distance from the "light reflex" (the glint in the center of the pupil) to the edge of the eyelid. MRD-1 refers to the upper eyelid measurement, while MRD-2 refers to the lower eyelid. This measurement is the "gold standard" for diagnosing ptosis (droopy eyelids) and is a mandatory requirement for insurance authorization for eyelid surgery.
