What Is Latent Hyperopia?

Latent hyperopia is a type of farsightedness (hyperopia) that is hidden because your eye's focusing muscle works extra hard to correct it. How Does the Eye Hide This Condition?

Your eye has a small muscle inside it that changes the shape of your lens to focus. In people with latent hyperopia, this muscle stays flexed all the time to keep things in focus. This constant work hides the underlying vision problem. This is most common in children and young adults whose focusing muscles are very strong.

What Are the Symptoms?

Even though your vision might be clear, the constant muscle work can cause other problems. The main symptoms are not blurry vision, but things like headaches, eye strain, and feeling tired after reading or doing computer work. Some children with a lot of latent hyperopia may develop crossed eyes (strabismus).

How Is Latent Hyperopia Found?

A regular eye exam might miss latent hyperopia because your focusing muscle is so active. To find it, an eye doctor must use special eye drops called cycloplegic drops. These drops temporarily relax the focusing muscle. This allows the doctor to measure the full amount of farsightedness that the muscle was hiding.

Accommodative Esotropia

In children, untreated latent hyperopia can lead to a visible eye turn, known as accommodative esotropia. Because the child's focusing system is linked to the muscles that turn the eyes inward (convergence), the intense effort required to focus clearly can cause the eyes to cross. Parents often notice this crossing when the child is tired or looking at something very close. Fortunately, this type of crossed eyes can often be completely fixed simply by wearing glasses that relax the focusing effort.

Is latent hyperopia a serious problem?

It is not a dangerous condition, but the constant strain it puts on your eyes can cause real discomfort like headaches and fatigue. In children, if it is not found, it can affect their learning.

Does it turn into regular hyperopia?

As you get older, your eye's focusing muscle gets weaker. When this happens, the muscle can no longer hide the farsightedness, and it becomes regular, noticeable hyperopia. You will then need glasses to see clearly.

Does everyone with farsightedness have a latent part?

Most young people with farsightedness have at least a small amount of latent hyperopia because their focusing systems are so strong.

When to See Your Eye Doctor

You should see an eye doctor if you have frequent headaches, tired eyes, or avoid reading, even if you think your vision is fine. These are common signs of hidden vision problems. For children, a full eye exam with eye drops is the only way to be sure they do not have a condition like latent hyperopia.
