How Does Placido Keratoscopy Work?

A Placido disc or Placido-based camera projects black-and-white concentric rings toward the cornea and captures their reflection. The tear film is the first surface that reflects the pattern, so an unstable tear film can change how the rings look. The examiner or software evaluates ring symmetry and spacing to infer curvature changes across the cornea. The test is quick, painless, and does not touch the eye.

Your eye doctor may recommend keratoscopy if you have blurred or distorted vision, a sudden change in astigmatism, or difficulty with contact lens comfort. It is also commonly used in screening before refractive surgery and when monitoring known corneal disorders.
