What Is an Iridectomy (Peripheral)?
A peripheral iridectomy is a surgical procedure that creates a small, permanent opening in the outer edge of the iris. This "bypass" allows the internal fluid of the eye to flow more easily from behind the iris into the front drainage angle. It is the primary treatment for "angle-closure glaucoma," a dangerous condition where the iris is pushed forward and blocks the eye's drain, causing a rapid and painful spike in pressure. While most iridectomies are now performed with a laser, a surgical iridectomy remains a vital option for complex cases or when the cornea is too cloudy for laser light to pass through.
