What Is Intolerance to CL Solution?
Intolerance to contact lens solution, clinically known as "solution-induced corneal staining" (SICS), is a toxic or allergic reaction to the preservatives found in multipurpose cleaning liquids. While these solutions are essential for killing bacteria, the chemicals used, such as Polyquad or PHMB, can sometimes be absorbed by the contact lens material. When the lens is placed on the eye, these chemicals are slowly released directly onto the sensitive corneal tissue. This results in a cycle of chronic redness, burning, and blurred vision that often makes the patient believe their lenses are the problem, when the "liquid" is actually the culprit.
