What Is Iliotibial Band Release?
Iliotibial band release is surgery that cuts, lengthens, or removes a selected portion of the iliotibial band to reduce excessive tension or painful friction. The iliotibial band is a thick band of fascia that runs along the outside of the thigh from the hip to the upper tibia. Surgery can target the distal band near the knee or a proximal portion near the hip depending on the condition being treated. It is generally reserved for persistent symptoms after nonsurgical treatment has failed.
