When Is HoLEP Considered?

An enlarged prostate can cause a weak stream, difficulty starting urination, or incomplete bladder emptying. HoLEP may be considered when symptoms are bothersome or complications develop. A urologist reviews the prostate, urinary symptoms, and other health factors before recommending treatment.

How Is Prostate Tissue Removed?

The surgeon passes an instrument through the urethra, so no abdominal incision is needed. A holmium laser separates the obstructing tissue and moves it into the bladder. The tissue is then removed with a device that breaks it into smaller pieces.

What Happens During Recovery?

A urinary catheter is typically used for a short period after surgery. Blood in the urine, burning, or temporary difficulty controlling urine may occur. Follow-up visits assess healing and whether urine flow has improved.

What Are the Risks?

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, and temporary urinary incontinence. Scar tissue can later narrow the urethra or bladder opening. Changes in ejaculation are also common after tissue is removed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate

Is HoLEP a treatment for prostate cancer?

No. HoLEP treats blockage from benign prostate enlargement, although the removed tissue can be examined for unexpected cancer.

Does HoLEP remove the entire prostate?

No. It removes the enlarged inner tissue that obstructs urine flow and leaves the outer portion of the gland in place.

Will I need a catheter afterward?

Usually, yes. The care team removes it when it is appropriate to check whether you can urinate on your own.

Can urine leakage occur after HoLEP?

Yes. Leakage may occur during recovery and frequently improves, but persistent incontinence is possible.
