Hirschberg Test

A fundamental test where the examiner shines a light onto the patient's eyes and observes the position of the light reflection (corneal light reflex) relative to the center of the pupil in each eye. A centered reflex indicates proper alignment.

Cover/Uncover Test

The most precise alignment test. It involves covering and uncovering one eye while observing the movement of the other eye to detect a manifest deviation (tropia) or a latent deviation (phoria).

Importance

Early detection of misalignment in children is critical for preventing amblyopia (lazy eye) and ensuring proper development of binocular (3D) vision.

What does 'tropia' mean?

A tropia is a manifest deviation (strabismus) that is always present, even when both eyes are open and trying to fixate on a target.

What is Fusion?

Fusion is the brain's ability to seamlessly combine the slightly different images received from each eye into a single, three-dimensional image.

Can misalignment cause double vision?

Yes, especially in adults with acquired strabismus, the inability of the brain to fuse the images results in diplopia (double vision).
