What Is Free Flap Reconstruction?
Free flap reconstruction is surgery that transfers living tissue from one part of the body to another after completely separating it from its original blood supply. The transferred tissue can include skin, fat, muscle, bone, fascia, or a combination of these structures. Surgeons reconnect the flap artery and vein to recipient blood vessels using microsurgical techniques. Once circulation is restored, the flap can replace missing tissue and help restore form, coverage, or function.
