What Is Focus Accommodation?

Focus accommodation is the automatic process by which the eye changes its optical power to maintain a clear image (focus) as the gaze shifts between distant objects and near objects. This change is necessary to keep light focused precisely on the retina.

What is the Mechanism of Action?

The mechanism of action involves three components. The ciliary muscle contracts, which releases tension on the zonular fibers that hold the lens. The lens, which is naturally elastic, then thickens and increases its curvature. This increased curvature adds optical power, allowing the eye to focus the light from near objects onto the retina.

How Does Age Affect Accommodation?

Age severely affects accommodation. As people age (typically after 40), the natural lens inside the eye becomes harder and less flexible. This hardening prevents the lens from changing shape when the ciliary muscle contracts. This loss of flexibility is the fundamental cause of presbyopia (age-related near vision loss).

What are the Components of the Accommodative Triad?

The accommodative triad is a coordinated set of three actions: accommodation (the lens changes power), convergence (the eyes turn inward to maintain alignment), and pupillary constriction (the pupil shrinks to increase depth of focus).

How Does Accommodation Relate to Contact Lens Correction?

The loss of accommodation is corrected by multifocal or monovision contact lenses. These lenses compensate for the stiffening of the natural lens, allowing the wearer to see clearly at both near and far distances without requiring the eye to physically change focus.

What are the Symptoms of Accommodative Failure?

The main symptoms of accommodative failure are blurred vision when reading, difficulty threading a needle, or the need to hold reading materials far away (at arm's length) to see them clearly.

FAQs on Focus Accommodation

Is accommodation only for near vision?

Accommodation is needed when shifting from distance vision to near vision, but the eye is in its relaxed, unaccommodated state for distance viewing.

Can I practice accommodation to stop presbyopia?

No, presbyopia is caused by physical hardening of the lens protein and cannot be prevented by exercise.

Is accommodative ability the same in both eyes?

Yes, accommodative ability is generally symmetrical in both eyes.

When to See Your Doctor

If you experience "Accommodative Spasm", where your vision stays blurry for distance after reading, you may have over-worked your eye muscles. A doctor can perform a "Cycloplegic Refraction" using special drops to relax the focusing muscle and determine your true prescription.
