What Are Eyelash Extensions?

Eyelash extensions are a cosmetic enhancement used to create longer, fuller, and darker-looking eyelashes. The extensions are not a single strip. They are individual, semi-permanent fibers that are attached one by one to your own natural eyelashes. The fibers are usually made of a synthetic material, silk, or mink.

How Are Eyelash Extensions Applied?

The application is a very careful and long process. You will lie down with your eyes closed. A certified lash artist will use a special, long-lasting glue to attach a single extension fiber to one of your natural lashes. This process is repeated for almost every individual lash. A full, new set can take 2 to 3 hours to apply.

What Are the Different Styles?

There are many different styles you can choose from. A "Classic" set is the most natural, where one extension is applied to each natural lash. A "Volume" set is more dramatic and involves attaching a tiny, handmade "fan" of 2 or more very thin extensions to each natural lash. You can also choose different lengths and curl shapes to create a custom look.

What Maintenance Is Required?

Eyelash extensions require regular maintenance. Your natural lashes have a growth cycle and fall out every 6 to 8 weeks, and the extension falls out with them. To keep your extensions looking full, you will need a "fill" appointment every 2 to 4 weeks. During a fill, the artist will add new extensions to the lashes that have grown in.

How Do You Care for Eyelash Extensions?

You must follow specific aftercare rules to protect your extensions. The most important rule is to avoid all oil-based makeup removers and cleansers, as oil will break down the glue. You should also avoid rubbing or pulling on your eyes and must gently brush the lashes with a clean spoolie brush each day to keep them from tangling.

The Lash Growth Cycle

It is normal to lose 3 to 5 natural lashes every day. This is because your eyelashes go through a natural growth cycle with three phases: Anagen (growth), Catagen (transition), and Telogen (resting/shedding). Extensions are attached to individual lashes. When a natural lash reaches the end of its cycle and sheds, the extension falls out with it. This natural shedding is why you need fill appointments every few weeks.

FAQs on Eyelash Extensions

Do eyelash extensions damage your natural lashes?

When they are applied correctly by a trained professional, they should not damage your natural lashes. Damage can happen if the extensions are too heavy for your natural lash or if they are glued together in clumps. This is why choosing a good lash artist is so important.

Can I wear mascara with eyelash extensions?

Most people find they do not need mascara at all. If you do wear it, it must be a water-based formula that is made for extensions, and you should only apply it to the very tips. Waterproof mascara will ruin the extensions.

Can I get them wet?

Yes. You will need to keep them dry for the first 24 to 48 hours to let the glue fully cure. After that, it is fine to get them wet. In fact, you must gently wash your lashes regularly to keep them clean and healthy.

When to See a Professional

You must always go to a certified and reputable lash artist. This is a very delicate procedure that requires a lot of skill. Never try to apply or remove them yourself, as you can damage your natural lashes. If you ever experience pain, redness, or swelling after an application, you should contact a doctor, as it could be an allergic reaction to the glue.
