What Is Evisceration?
Evisceration is a surgical procedure in which the inner contents of the eye are removed while leaving the outer scleral shell and most surrounding structures in place. It is usually performed when the eye has lost vision permanently and causes pain or carries a risk of severe infection. By keeping the outer shell intact, the procedure supports better implant movement compared to complete removal of the eye. People often choose evisceration when comfort and cosmetic appearance are priorities. Healing continues over several weeks as tissues settle around the implant.
