What Causes the Blood Flow Reversal and What is the Mechanism?

The cause is a pre-existing large heart defect, such as a hole between the heart chambers. This defect causes blood to be shunted (pushed) from the left side of the heart (high pressure) to the right side of the heart (low pressure).
