How Does Dipentum Act in the Colon?

Olsalazine reaches the colon and is converted by colonic bacteria into mesalamine, also called 5-aminosalicylic acid. Mesalamine then acts locally on colonic epithelial cells. Its precise mechanism is not fully defined, but its therapeutic activity appears to involve topical anti-inflammatory effects within the colon.

Who Is Treated With Dipentum?

Dipentum is indicated for maintenance of ulcerative colitis remission in adults who are intolerant of sulfasalazine. It is not labeled to induce remission during an active ulcerative colitis flare. Current labeling does not establish safety and efficacy in pediatric patients.

How Are Dipentum Capsules Dosed?

The recommended dose is 500 mg by mouth twice daily, equal to two 250 mg capsules per dose. Patients are advised to drink adequate fluids during treatment to reduce the risk of kidney stone formation. Kidney function is assessed before therapy and periodically while treatment continues.

What Serious Risks Are Linked to Dipentum?

Serious concerns include kidney impairment, mesalamine-induced acute intolerance syndrome, hypersensitivity reactions, liver failure, severe skin reactions, photosensitivity, and kidney stones. Acute intolerance can resemble an ulcerative colitis flare with cramping, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, fever, headache, or rash. Hypersensitivity to salicylates or aminosalicylates is a contraindication.
