What Is Diaphragm Repair?
Diaphragm repair is surgery used to close a tear, hole, or abnormal opening in the diaphragm, the muscle separating the chest from the abdomen. Repair can be needed after trauma or for congenital or acquired diaphragmatic hernias. The operation restores the barrier between the chest and abdominal cavities and helps prevent abdominal organs from moving into the chest. Depending on the defect, surgeons use sutures alone or reinforce the repair with a patch or mesh.
