What Is Cycloplegia?
Cycloplegia is a temporary relaxation of the eye's focusing muscle caused by medicated eye drops. It prevents the eye from adjusting its focus, allowing accurate measurement of refractive error during an exam. The drops also dilate the pupil to let doctors see the back of the eye clearly. The effect usually lasts for a few hours before wearing off naturally. Cycloplegia helps doctors prescribe the correct lenses, especially for children or patients with overactive focusing muscles.
