How Does Cosentyx Block IL-17A?

Secukinumab selectively binds the interleukin-17A cytokine and prevents its interaction with the IL-17 receptor. IL-17A participates in normal inflammatory and immune responses. Blocking this pathway reduces release of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines involved in several immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.

Which Conditions Are Treated With Cosentyx?

Cosentyx treats moderate to severe plaque psoriasis from age 6, psoriatic arthritis from age 2, ankylosing spondylitis from age 12, enthesitis-related arthritis from age 4, and moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa from age 12. It also treats active non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis with objective inflammation in adults.

How Is Cosentyx Dosed?

Dosing depends on the condition, age, body weight, and route. Adult plaque psoriasis commonly uses 300 mg subcutaneously at weeks 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4, then every four weeks. Adult hidradenitis suppurativa uses the same starting schedule, followed by 300 mg every four weeks, with every-two-week dosing considered after inadequate response.

What Serious Risks Are Linked to Cosentyx?

Serious concerns include infections, severe hypersensitivity reactions, tuberculosis reactivation, inflammatory bowel disease, and severe eczematous eruptions. Patients are evaluated for tuberculosis before treatment. Live vaccines are avoided during therapy. New or worsening Crohn disease or ulcerative colitis symptoms require medical evaluation.
