What Is Corneal Transplantation?
Corneal transplantation, often called a cornea transplant or keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure that replaces damaged or diseased corneal tissue with a healthy, clear cornea from a human donor. The cornea is the eye's transparent, dome-shaped front window, and its function is to focus light onto the eye so a person can see clearly. When the cornea is scarred, swollen, or misshapen, light is not focused properly, leading to blurry vision or glare, necessitating the replacement of the diseased tissue to restore visual function.
