How Does Clodan Reduce Scalp Inflammation?

Clobetasol propionate has anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive activity. Its exact anti-inflammatory mechanism is unclear. Topical corticosteroids are thought to induce proteins that reduce production of inflammatory mediators derived from arachidonic acid, including prostaglandins and leukotrienes.

Who Is Treated With Clodan?

Clodan is indicated for adults with moderate to severe scalp psoriasis. Use in patients younger than 18 is not recommended due observed rates of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression with clobetasol shampoo. Clodan is for scalp use and is not used on the face, groin, or underarms.

How Is Clodan Shampoo Used?

A thin film of Clodan is applied once daily to affected areas of a dry scalp and left in place for 15 minutes. Water is then added, and the hair and scalp are lathered and rinsed thoroughly. Treatment is limited to four consecutive weeks, with a weekly maximum of 50 mL.

What Safety Problems Need Attention With Clodan?

Clodan can suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and can cause Cushing syndrome, high blood glucose, or unmask latent diabetes through systemic corticosteroid absorption. Local reactions include burning, itching, swelling, folliculitis, acne, dry skin, irritation, skin thinning, hair loss, hives, and visible small blood vessels.
