How Does Celebrex Reduce Pain and Inflammation?

Celecoxib inhibits prostaglandin synthesis primarily through cyclooxygenase-2 inhibition. Prostaglandins contribute to pain, inflammation, and fever by sensitizing nerves and participating in inflammatory signaling. Reducing prostaglandin production gives celecoxib its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activity.

Which Conditions Are Treated With Celebrex?

Celebrex treats signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis from age 2, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is also used for acute pain in adults and primary dysmenorrhea. Dose selection depends on the condition, age, body weight in pediatric arthritis, liver function, and CYP2C9 metabolism.

How Are Celebrex Capsules Dosed?

Osteoarthritis uses 200 mg once daily or 100 mg twice daily. Rheumatoid arthritis uses 100 mg to 200 mg twice daily. Ankylosing spondylitis starts with 200 mg daily. Acute pain and primary dysmenorrhea use 400 mg initially, followed by 200 mg later on the first day when needed, then 200 mg twice daily when needed.

What Serious Risks Are Linked to Celebrex?

Celebrex carries a boxed warning for serious cardiovascular thrombotic events and serious gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, or perforation. Other concerns include liver injury, high blood pressure, heart failure, kidney toxicity, high potassium, anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions, and fetal toxicity. Use during coronary artery bypass graft surgery is contraindicated.
