When Is Burn Reconstruction Considered?

Deep burns may need surgery to cover areas that cannot heal adequately on their own. After healing, a scar can tighten and limit movement, particularly near a joint. Reconstruction may also address scars that interfere with the eyelids, mouth, or other body parts.

Which Procedures May Be Used?

A surgeon may release a tight scar and rearrange nearby tissue. A skin graft or tissue flap can cover the area when additional tissue is needed. Some scars may be treated with laser procedures or a series of operations.

What Happens During Recovery?

Wound care protects grafts, flaps, and surgical incisions as they heal. Splints or physical and occupational therapy may help preserve movement. Additional scar care or procedures may be needed as healing continues.

What Are the Risks?

Possible complications include infection, bleeding, and poor wound healing. A graft or flap may not survive fully, and a scar can tighten again. Results vary with the original burn and the amount of healthy surrounding tissue.

Frequently Asked Questions About Burn Reconstruction

Is burn reconstruction always done soon after the injury?

No. Some procedures cover an acute burn, while others treat scars and movement problems after the initial wound has healed.

Does every burn scar need surgery?

No. The treatment depends on symptoms, movement limits, and the scar's location and severity.

What is a skin graft?

It is skin taken from another area and placed over a wound. The donor area also needs time to heal.

Can reconstruction remove a burn scar completely?

Usually not. Treatment may improve movement, comfort, or appearance, but some scarring remains possible.
