What Is Autologous Blood Transfusion?
Autologous blood transfusion is a transfusion in which a patient receives their own previously collected or recovered blood. The blood can be donated before planned surgery, collected immediately before an operation, or recovered during or after surgery. Using the patient's own red blood cells avoids exposure to donor red-cell antigens. The method selected depends on the operation, expected blood loss, patient condition, and available equipment.
