What are the Types of Cysts and How Do They Form?

The most common types are functional cysts, which form as part of the normal menstrual cycle. Follicular cysts form when the egg follicle fails to rupture and release the egg. Corpus luteum cysts form after the follicle seals up and fluid accumulates inside it. These cysts are non-cancerous and usually resolve spontaneously.

What Symptoms are Associated with the Cysts?

Most small cysts cause no symptoms. Larger cysts may cause pelvic pain, a feeling of fullness or heaviness in the abdomen, or bloating. Severe, sudden pain may signal a rupture or torsion (twisting) of the ovary, which is an emergency.

How is an Ovarian Cyst Diagnosed and Monitored?

Diagnosis is made using a pelvic ultrasound, which confirms the size, location, and fluid content of the cyst. Small, simple cysts are often monitored over several cycles to confirm they shrink, while complex or growing cysts require further investigation.

How Does This Condition Impact Vision or Eye Health?

This condition has no direct physical impact on vision or eye health. The effects are localized to the pelvic area. The condition does not involve inflammation or damage to the ocular system.

What are the Indications for Surgical Intervention?

Surgical intervention is indicated if the cyst is very large, appears suspicious on ultrasound, causes persistent severe pain, or if the ovary has twisted (torsion). Surgery removes the cyst while preserving the ovary when possible.

FAQs on Ovarian Cyst

Are ovarian cysts always painful?

No, most small, "functional" cysts occur during the normal menstrual cycle and are completely painless, often resolving on their own.

Can ovarian cysts be cancerous?

The vast majority are benign. However, "complex" cysts in post-menopausal women carry a higher risk and require surgical evaluation.

Can birth control pills help?

Yes, hormonal birth control suppresses ovulation, which effectively prevents the formation of new functional cysts.

When to See Your Doctor

Seek emergency care for sudden, severe pelvic pain with fever or vomiting; this could be "Ovarian Torsion" (the ovary twisting). Torsion requires immediate surgery to save the organ. Regular pelvic ultrasounds are the standard for monitoring cyst size.
