What Is a Somatostatin Analog?
A somatostatin analog is a synthetic medicine designed to imitate actions of the natural hormone somatostatin. These drugs bind to one or more somatostatin receptor subtypes and suppress release of selected hormones and signaling molecules. They last longer in the body than natural somatostatin, which is broken down rapidly. Examples include octreotide, lanreotide, and pasireotide.
