What Are Salicylates Used For?

Selected salicylates are used to reduce pain, fever, and inflammation. Low-dose aspirin is prescribed for certain patients to reduce platelet aggregation and the risk of cardiovascular events. Bismuth subsalicylate is used for diarrhea and upset stomach, while topical salicylic acid treats conditions involving thickened or clogged skin. The appropriate product depends on the condition because salicylates are not interchangeable.

How Do Salicylates Work?

Aspirin irreversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes and reduces production of prostaglandins and thromboxane. This action accounts for its pain-relieving, fever-reducing, anti-inflammatory, and antiplatelet effects. Other salicylates can affect related inflammatory pathways but do not always act exactly like aspirin. Topical salicylic acid primarily works as a keratolytic agent that loosens excess outer skin.

How Are Salicylates Taken or Applied?

Salicylates are available as tablets, chewable products, liquids, creams, gels, patches, and other dosage forms. Dosing depends on the active ingredient, concentration, age, indication, and other medicines.
