What Is a Nesting Doll Cataract (Layered)?
A nesting doll cataract is an informal descriptive term for a cataract that shows multiple concentric layers of opacity within the lens, resembling nested dolls. The pattern can occur in some lamellar, cortical, or mixed cataracts where zones of older, denser change are surrounded by newer, less dense opacities. Each layer represents lens fibers that aged or degenerated at different times. The appearance can be striking on slit lamp examination, but it is still a form of ordinary cataract. Visual impact depends on how much of the visual axis these layered opacities involve.
