What Is a Javal Reading Axis?
A Javal reading axis is the direction, in degrees, linked to a keratometer reading of corneal astigmatism. It describes the orientation of the steep and flat meridians of the cornea, usually written on a 1 to 180 degree scale. Clinicians use this axis along with curvature values to guide cylinder correction for glasses or contact lenses. The reading comes from keratometry, which measures reflections from the front surface of the cornea. Results can be less accurate when the cornea is irregular, when the tear film is unstable, or when the patient cannot fixate well.
