What Is a Jack-in-the-Box Scotoma (Frame Edge)?
A jack-in-the-box scotoma is a visual field gap where objects disappear and then suddenly reappear, often near the edge of a strong spectacle lens. It is classically linked to high-plus aphakic glasses, where the lens edge can create a ring-shaped blind area from prismatic effects. When the eye moves and an object crosses that ring, the object can seem to pop in and out of view. This effect can feel startling during walking, stairs, or driving. Contact lenses or an intraocular lens can reduce the effect by changing where the correction sits.
