What Is a Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa Inhibitor?
A glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor is an antiplatelet medicine that blocks receptors on the surface of activated platelets. These receptors normally bind fibrinogen and related proteins that link platelets together. Blocking this final common step of platelet aggregation reduces formation of platelet-rich blood clots. Examples include eptifibatide and tirofiban.
