What Is a Fetal Scalp Electrode?
A fetal scalp electrode is a small internal monitoring device attached to the baby’s scalp during labor to record fetal heart rate. It is placed through the cervix after the membranes have ruptured and the cervix is open enough for access. The electrode connects to a fetal monitor and can provide a more direct heart rate signal than external monitoring. It is used only by trained obstetric clinicians in selected labor settings.
