What Is a Contrast Sensitivity Test?
A contrast sensitivity test measures how well someone can see differences between light and dark areas. Unlike standard charts that use bold black letters on a white background, this test uses patterns or letters that fade in contrast. It can reveal problems that are not obvious when high-contrast letters still look clear. People with reduced contrast sensitivity may struggle in dim light, fog, or glare even with good chart readings. Testing gives a fuller picture of how vision performs in real-world conditions.
